Family, Community, Nature: The       of Sussex County Nature School

Our
Philosophy

Our Philosophy

At Sussex County Nature School, we believe that kids grow best when they have time to slow down, step away from screens, and let their imaginations take the lead. We create a space where children can play, explore, and discover the world around them, all while finding peace and enjoying nature. Our goal is to help kids develop a love and appreciation for the outdoors, while also bringing families and the community together to share in these fun, meaningful experiences.

Here at SCNS, we let nature be our teacher. We embrace muddy hands, wild hair, and every bit of adventure that comes with exploring the great outdoors!

Our Core Beliefs

Reasons to Love Nature School

Hands-On Learning

Children engage in active, experiential learning through outdoor activities, exploring nature up close and building a deeper connection to the world around them.

Creativity & Self-Expression

Nature-inspired art activities allow children to express themselves creatively, enhancing their problem-solving and artistic abilities.

Development of Environmental Stewardship

Nature school fosters a sense of responsibility and respect for the environment, encouraging children to care for the planet from a young age.

Emotional Growth

Being outdoors promotes self-confidence, resilience, and emotional regulation, allowing children to navigate challenges in a safe and supportive environment.

Physical Health & Well-being

Spending time outdoors helps children develop physical strength, coordination, and a healthy lifestyle. It also gives kids the chance to slow down, unwind, and relax.

Immunity Boost

Time spent outdoors exposes children to fresh air and natural elements, supporting immune system development and reducing stress levels.

Children Take the Lead

Educators guide children’s learning by following their natural curiosity, encouraging exploration, and allowing their interests to shape daily activities and discoveries.

ZERO Screen Time

Nature school minimizes reliance on technology, encouraging children to explore, imagine, and engage with the world through active, non-digital experiences.

Social Skills & Teamwork

Collaborative activities in the outdoors help children strengthen social bonds, develop empathy, and work effectively in teams.

Owner & Director

Katrina Jacinto

Katrina is a 1st grade teacher with over five years of experience in early childhood education. Passionate about the outdoors, she has witnessed firsthand the profound impact that a lack of nature and unstructured play has on young learners. Katrina firmly believes that children need time to slow down, unwind, and allow their imaginations to roam freely.

This belief led her to create Sussex County Nature School – a program designed to provide children with the opportunity to connect with nature, explore, and experience hands-on learning. She is excited to see how this program evolves and she has big goals for the future of this program.

Whether your child is looking to unplug from traditional schooling or complement their homeschooling experience, Sussex County Nature School offers the ideal environment for both.
